Our Story
The Hundred of Comaum - at the heart of Coonawarra history - was originally divided into land tenure maps called "Hundreds". In 1890 Schotsman John Riddoch planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the Hundred of Comaum. He saw the potential of the rick red terra rossa soil and produced the first Coonawarra vintage in 1895 - described at the time as 'of superior quality'. Thus Coonawarra was created within the Hundred of Comaum. In 1946 the property was renamed Chateau Comaum.
In 2007 entrepreneur Stephen Moignard purchased the Comaum vineyard and established the brand 'Hundred of Comaum'. Set on 200 acres including heritage listed bush land, the Hundred of Comaum encompasses the Coonawarra Bush Holiday park & Coonawarra Discovery wine tours. You can stay next to the vineyard in stylish glamping yurts with King bed, power, heating & your own fire, or in motel-style units. The bubble apartments are a unique addition, designed & developed exclusively for Hundred of Comaum.
The original winery building now houses the holiday park camp kitchen & amenities, then winery having outgrown it. Wine making is now carried out off-site under the watchful eyes of Gavin Hogg, holder of two Jimmy Watson medals & numerous other achievements. Hundred of Comaum aims to make a range of wines to suit overseas & local palates, and has succeeded in establishing its own distribution network & branded stores in China.
